What is JKA?

Master Gichin Funakoshi

Established in 1948, the Japan Karate Association (JKA) is one of the most respected and globally recognized organizations for traditional Shotokan karate.

Known for its emphasis on strong technique, discipline, and character development, JKA upholds the highest standards of karate practice and instruction. 

With a rich history rooted in the teachings of Master Gichin Funakoshi, the JKA continues to preserve and promote the true spirit of karate worldwide.

About Sensei Ryan

Sensei Ryan
Sensei Ryan has been passionate about teaching for over 20 years, beginning his journey as an assistant karate instructor. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Bachelor of Education, bringing his experience as a Secondary teacher with the Vancouver School Board into his karate instruction.

 

As a black belt (3rd Dan) and close personal student of Sensei Don Sharp (7th Dan), one of the world’s top karate masters, Sensei Ryan continually sharpens his skills and deepens his knowledge. This mentorship ensures he remains connected to the highest levels of JKA karate, constantly refining his techniques and teaching approach.

 

Additionally, Sensei Ryan trains annually at the JKA headquarters in Tokyo, immersing himself in the birthplace of traditional karate. This regular training keeps him closely connected to the founding JKA masters and ensures his knowledge and techniques stay true to the art’s core principles. These experiences allow him to bring back the latest teachings and insights from the global JKA community to share with his students, to ensure the highest level of JKA Karate training.
